Field notes from soft installs

From gallery plinth wraps to clinic screens and hotel foyers, each Felt studio install comes with its own lessons. See how practical soft surfaces work in real South African spaces.

What we learn from each project

Every site has its quirks. In a gallery in Woodstock, Merino Plinth Felt gave five ledges a crisp, tailored protection without any fraying edges or messy seams. For a windy Sea Point apartment, Softline Wall Felt took the chill off the lounge while a Hearth Runner made sense of high-traffic tiles near the window.

The real lesson is in fitting felt to the needs of each space. A Stellenbosch cafe needed booth backs to survive heavy use, so we used Banquette Wrap with a neat bound edge and clipped Ceiling Cloud Felt above to soften café clatter. In a Durban clinic, Acoustic Panel Felt calmed the paediatric wait area, and partition screens split a play zone without echo.

Most projects start with a site visit and samples in hand, but the trick is always local: for sunny Joburg lofts, we remind clients to rotate felt pieces away from harsh UV near windows; in the Cape, damp winters mean letting wall felt breathe and dry out after storms.

How to borrow ideas for your space

Many clients spot ideas in our sample library or from a previous install. A Muizenberg villa added window seat cushions after seeing how they worked in a Constantia hallway. Gqeberha schools often ask about library reading nooks with window seats and acoustic panels, after seeing simple, layered fits in Pretoria and Stellenbosch.

When planning your own install, consider both the function and the feel. For passageways, a Hearth Runner or Entry Mat Soft is practical for dust and sand. In foyers or lobbies, felt wall panels quiet footfall and chatter, and modular panels can be swapped or updated without ripping everything out.

  • Plan surface finishes for real use: wear, kids, dust, sun, rain
  • Use felt to split and soften big rooms without making them stuffy
  • Choose modular panels if you want the option to update or move
  • Rotate or shade felt pieces near bright windows to slow fading
  • Brush and vacuum wool felt, especially in quiet corners
