Project
For this Woodstock gallery, we wrapped five display ledges in Merino Plinth Felt to bring quiet texture and soft protection to a busy exhibition space.
This gallery in Woodstock sits close to the main street, with a steady stream of school groups, artists and locals passing through. The original plinths and display ledges were painted MDF, which looked smart at first but quickly picked up knocks and marks from regular use.
Scuffed corners and chipped surfaces became a familiar problem, especially after exhibition changes and weekend events. The gallery needed a way to keep the ledges looking sharp without constant patching or repainting.
We recommended Merino Plinth Felt for its dense, cushioned finish and subtle texture that suits both contemporary and classic hanging styles. The felt is made locally from a blend of fine merino fibres, chosen for their natural recovery and resilience against daily wear.
Our team fitted the felt tightly around five main ledges, using careful edge binding and discreet adhesive so the installation stayed neat but could be replaced when needed. The felt finish means artwork, ceramics and even the odd book stack can rest safely without slipping or scratching the surface.
We suggested gentle hues like Ink Edge and Stone Wash to work with the gallery's variable lighting, pale floors and the shifting mix of art on show. Clients could feel and compare samples at our Woodstock studio before deciding on the final combination.
The gallery team noticed visitors now linger longer at the plinths, with no more chilly elbows or that clatter from hard surfaces. The felt has stood up well to busy foot traffic and the odd coffee cup, with minor marks easily brushed or blotted away.
One time we forgot to remind the cleaners about the 'no wet mop' rule and had a patch stay damp too long, which needed quick drying to avoid mustiness. Otherwise, the felt kept its shape and colour, and the space feels warmer and quieter even when packed.
Regular vacuuming and a quick brush before opening have become the routine, and so far there have been no moth or beetle problems, just lots of positive comments on the tactile finish.
If you are looking to cushion ledges, plinths or display runs in any public or shared area, a dense felt wrap can be a practical upgrade. It is quieter under hand, helps stop dirt lines, and hides scrapes that paint and timber show so quickly.
Choose a colour that works with your light and art style, and always try a sample in the actual room if possible. Leave a note for your cleaning team to keep water away from the felt, and tackle any spills straight away with a cool, damp cloth.
We can organise samples or site visits from our Woodstock studio or through our contact form if you want to see or feel options in person.
