Soft material editorial

Felt studio grew from a simple frustration: too many South African rooms end up all hard surfaces and sticky vinyl when the people in them wanted quiet. We cut merino-blend and acoustic felt, wrap plinths, line walls and hang ceiling clouds, and we write plain notes on fitting and care so clients know what to expect.

Operated by Astros Marketing (Pty) Ltd, 2 Makro Place, Sunnyrock 1401.

The people behind Felt studio

A felt studio rooted in Woodstock

Felt studio calls Woodstock, Cape Town home. We design, cut and finish soft felt goods for homes, schools, businesses and hospitality spaces across South Africa. Our sample library and cutting studio are open for viewing by appointment, led by Ms Thandi Mokoena.

We operate under Astros Marketing (Pty) Ltd from Sunnyrock, but Woodstock is where we keep our material library and do most of the hands-on work. You can collect samples or your finished order through our showroom bays in Rosebank, Canal Walk, Gateway, Menlyn, Tyger Valley, Brooklyn Design Square and the V&A Waterfront.

Why we focus only on felt

We work only in felt because it is versatile, quiet underfoot, gentle to touch and brings softness to rooms otherwise dominated by hard finishes. Felt is a non-woven textile, so its cut edges do not fray, and it shapes neatly around plinths, steps and panels.

We offer both wool felt and polyester acoustic felt, each suited to specific needs. Wool felt is popular for plinth wraps, runners and trays. Polyester acoustic felt is preferred for wall panels, ceiling clouds and partition screens where its sound-absorbing qualities matter and where spaces need easy cleaning and humidity resistance.

Choosing wool or acoustic felt for your project

South African merino wool is a world-class fibre, grown mainly in the Eastern Cape and sold through auctions in Gqeberha. Our Merino Plinth Felt and selected soft goods use a merino blend. Wool felt helps buffer humidity in a room and is naturally slow to ignite, which is valued in busy public spaces.

Our polyester acoustic felt is made by needling polyester fibres, sometimes with recycled bottles. It absorbs speech and clatter well, does not feed moths, and shrugs off humidity, making it a practical choice for clinics, schools and offices. We confirm the best fit for your project on your written quote, including the exact thickness and test data.

  • Wool felt suits plinths, runners, trays and soft wraps
  • Polyester acoustic felt performs in wall panels and ceiling clouds
