How we cut, edge and finish felt

Every felt piece from our Woodstock studio is measured, cut and finished for your project, using both traditional hand skills and practical detailing.

Choosing the right felt for each job

We match each project to the right felt using our sample library in Woodstock. Our team will guide you on which textile best fits your need, whether it’s a dense layer for plinths, a wall covering to soften sound, or a hard-wearing mat. Sometimes we recommend wool felt, which helps buffer humidity and self-extinguishes if exposed to flame. Other times, especially for acoustic panels or screens needing easy care, we use polyester acoustic felt, which resists moths and handles damp environments without fuss.

We always confirm the felt type, thickness and test data on your quote, so you know exactly what is being used in your space. We also check dye lots to avoid colour variation when making up large or multi-part installations.

How we cut felt in our studio

Felt is a non-woven textile, so it can be cut cleanly without fraying. We use metal straightedges and sharp blades for precise lines, whether it’s wall felt, runners, mats or shaped panels. Complex shapes or repeated parts are cut on our template tables, while large, one-off pieces are measured and marked by hand before cutting.

We work under natural light and check every piece for clean edges and uniform finish. Where two felt colours meet, our team ensures a crisp join with no loose fibres. Every offcut is reviewed for possible reuse in smaller items or samples.

The details of edging and backing

Each product gets a finishing treatment that suits its use and setting. For many wall and ceiling panels, we leave edges raw, felt’s dense structure means it stays neat without binding. Entry mats and runners are given a grip back to stay put on tile or concrete floors. Where a project needs extra durability or a decorative touch, we offer stitched or piped edges, or a bound edge for wraps and cushions.

Layered felt is used for window seat cushions and banquette wraps, sometimes topped with linen for a change in texture. Acoustic panels may be fitted with battens or spaced off the wall for better sound absorption, as per your acoustic engineer’s plan.

Packing and delivering your finished felt

Once each piece passes inspection, we pack it to arrive flat and undamaged, whether it’s headed to a Johannesburg office or a coastal school in Durban. Larger installations are rolled with tissue interleaves or laid flat on boards, never folded, to preserve their shape and finish.

Our team coordinates delivery and, if needed, installation across South Africa. If you have a question about care or fitting, send us a message through our contact form and someone will guide you.
