Soft felt panels and new window seat cushions brought quiet and comfort to a busy Pretoria school library, making reading time more inviting for learners.
This Pretoria school library saw constant foot traffic, chatty learners, and the usual shuffling of chairs across tile. The room often echoed, and the old window seats had faded covers and lumpy foam that did little to invite tired readers to settle down. With a growing need for a softer, quieter space that still looked welcoming, the library team asked us to recommend something tough enough for daily use, yet comfortable for long reading hours.
Natural light from the windows was a big plus, but glare and hard surfaces made the room feel stark at times. The library’s open plan meant sound carried easily, especially when the class next door was busy. The challenge was to soften the space without losing its clean look, and to keep materials practical for school life.
We proposed Acoustic Panel Felt tiles on the main reading wall, mounted with clips so the school could swap or move them later if layouts changed. The felt’s texture absorbs clatter and chatter, helping quiet the space for concentration. For the window seats, we made new layered felt cushions with piped edges, covered in a gentle Sage Field finish to tie in with the school’s colours. The layered felt fill keeps its shape under young readers and bounces back after a full day.
Felt was chosen because it is naturally soft to the touch and cut edges do not fray, so the panels and cushions stay neat even with heavy use. The panels were placed where sound bounced most and where little fingers tend to touch the wall, so any scuffs can be spot cleaned with a cool damp cloth. We also showed the staff how to rotate the window seat cushions to even out sun fade, especially important under Pretoria’s strong Highveld light.
A few months on, the library team told us the room feels much quieter and more settled, even during big breaks. Learners now linger on the window seats, and some bring their own books from home just to read in that spot. The felt panels have handled quite a bit of touching and the odd scribble, but marks have come off easily with a gentle dab and a bit of patience.
One thing we did notice is someone forgot to brush crumbs off the cushions now and then, so staff now check them each morning. The panels have stayed in place and still look crisp, and the space has generally been easier to keep clean and calm in the afternoon rush.
If you run a school library or reading corner, good felt panels and seat cushions can make a big difference to noise and comfort. Choose soft finishes in colours that will hide a bit of everyday wear, and go for mounting methods that allow easy panel swaps if you ever change the room layout.
In Pretoria, we always suggest checking for sun fade, especially in rooms that get long morning or afternoon sun. Rotating textile pieces and cleaning gently keeps everything looking ready for the next group. If you would like a similar result, send us a message with photos of your reading area and we will help with practical samples and advice for your space.
