Paarl farmhouse kitchen

Paarl’s old stone kitchen floors needed softening and safety. We used a Hearth Runner and Stair Nose Soft to make this farmhouse kitchen warmer underfoot.

A Paarl farmhouse kitchen with stone underfoot

Farm kitchens around Paarl are often built to stay cool in summer, with thick stone walls and tiled or stone floors. These floors last well but can be hard, cold and slippery, especially near the hearth and on steps between levels.

This particular kitchen is the centre of a working farm home, the heart of cooking, family meals, pets and regular traffic in and out from the braai stoep. During winter, the floor kept its chill, and the kitchen steps were a slip risk if feet or paws were wet from the garden.

Felt runner and stair wraps for warmth and grip

Our advice was to use the Hearth Runner along the main kitchen work zone, with Stair Nose Soft on the bullnosed stone treads. The runner's felt surface softens footsteps and keeps the stone from feeling icy on bare feet in the morning, while its grip back helps it stay put even with fast-moving kids or pets.

Stair Nose Soft wraps each step’s edge in a fitted felt cover. This reduces the risk of slipping and cushions any bumps, all without hiding the stone completely. Both pieces were supplied in Cloud Pale, blending gently with the grey stone but not showing every mark from muddy boots or tea spills.

What changed after a season

After a few months, the family found the kitchen far more comfortable for standing, especially on early winter mornings. The runner handled daily crumbs, muddy prints and occasional splashes with a quick vacuum and the odd spot clean. Being wool-based, the felt took up moisture but dried out well with a bit of breeze and sun through the window.

On the stairs, the felt nose wraps didn’t curl or shift, even with heavy use. The light colour took on some character but cleaned up well with gentle brushing. The family did note that felt should be vacuumed regularly and allowed to dry out after any wet cleaning, to avoid a musty smell.

What other clients can learn from this kitchen

Felt runners and stair wraps suit kitchens with cold or slippery floors, especially in farmhouses and older homes. They add comfort and safety with very little fuss or change to the original surfaces.

For stone or tile kitchens in Paarl’s climate, wool felt buffers humidity and insulates bare feet but does need regular care. If you plan to fit similar pieces, let us show you samples at our Woodstock studio or one of our showroom bays. We always recommend matching the felt colour to your floor and sending us a message with photos and details, so we can measure and cut to suit your steps and layout precisely.
