Project
For this Umhlanga boutique hotel lobby, we combined Entry Mat Soft at the main doors with Softline Wall Felt to lift the welcome area and manage sand and sound.
Umhlanga’s boutique hotels welcome a steady flow of guests and deliveries from the minute doors open. Sand, sea air and strong light stream in, especially in summer. The lobby’s tiled floor was getting marked quickly, and chatter echoed across the space, making it hard for staff and guests to hear each other at the reception desk.
The owners wanted the area to look calm and well-kept from the first step inside, but also needed materials that could handle wet sandals, suitcases and the humidity that comes with being right near the sea. The lobby needed a way to trap grit, reduce the clatter, and still look smart enough for high season arrivals.
We recommended Entry Mat Soft for the main doors, chosen for its dense felt structure with a grip back, set just inside to catch sand and water before it hits the tiles. Because felt is a non-woven textile, its cut edges do not fray, so we could shape the mat exactly to fit without fussing about binding every edge. The palette included Ink Edge for a crisp outline that hides marks, paired with a quieter tone for the main field.
Softline Wall Felt was installed behind the reception desk in a continuous run, using a rail mount system for a neat finish. This soft surface breaks up echoes by absorbing much of the speech and movement noise, which is especially important in a hard-floored room by the coast. As a bonus, the felt walls add a subtle textural contrast against painted plaster and glass. We worked with the owner to choose a colour that stays cool-looking and resists sun fade, given Umhlanga’s strong light.
After several busy months, both the felt entry mat and wall surface were still earning their keep. The Entry Mat Soft collected most of the sand and damp from shoes and wheeled bags, which meant less cleaning for the floor staff and fewer slip risks on rainy afternoons. Softline Wall Felt made the space noticeably quieter, especially during group check-ins or when the lobby filled up ahead of events.
We advised the cleaning team to vacuum both the mat and the wall weekly, and to spot clean only when needed. With Umhlanga’s humid climate, we also suggested opening doors on dry days to air out the felt and avoid any musty build-up. The wool felt’s natural ability to buffer moisture helped keep the space feeling fresh, but routine care is key in coastal settings.
For any hotel or guesthouse near the sea, the combination of a dense felt entry mat and acoustic wall felt can make arrivals smoother and keep the lobby looking cared-for. Pick mat colours that disguise sand and use a wall felt finish with good resistance to sunlight. Felt is easy to fit on site and edges stay smart without binding, but be sure to keep it clean and let it dry fully after a wet week.
If you want to see or feel the textiles in person, pop into our Gateway appointment showroom in Umhlanga or contact us to book a visit. We deliver and install across KZN, and our team can guide you on the best finishes for coastal climates.
