Partition Screen Felt brought privacy and acoustic comfort to busy coworking pods in student-filled Hatfield, balancing open flow with quieter focus zones.
Hatfield’s coworking pods serve students, freelancers and small teams in a dense, energetic university suburb. During term time, the shared floors fill up fast. With so many people on calls, collaborating or just hustling through assignments, noise and a lack of visual privacy became daily headaches. The open plan made it hard to settle into focused work, and students struggled to mark out personal space without feeling boxed in.
Managers and users wanted to keep the airy atmosphere and natural light, but needed practical ways to reduce noise, shape walkways and carve out smaller semi-private areas. Any solution had to be flexible, easy to clean and sturdy enough for heavy use. A hard partition would have closed things up, so a softer material was called for.
We recommended Partition Screen Felt for its flexibility and acoustic benefit. This textile works both as a visual divider and a sound softener, and its double-sided felt finish keeps spaces feeling warm and approachable. The screens can be freestanding or hung, so building services and daylight can flow where needed.
For this project, we supplied screens in calming Ink Edge and Mist Paper, picking up on local wall colours and campus blues. The screens’ edges are clean because felt is a non-woven textile, so it does not fray or shed bits under student wear and tear. Our fitters installed the screens to guide movement through the pods, breaking up noise corridors without boxing anyone in. The layout allows students to regroup the pods for events or quiet study blocks.
A few months in, feedback from both students and managers was clear: the new felt partitions cut down on echo and helped users focus, especially during hectic exam weeks. The pods feel less chaotic, with enough screening to do calls or group work without everyone overhearing. Clean-up crews liked that the screens could be wiped down or vacuumed as needed.
We did notice a touch of dust build-up at floor level, typical for busy Joburg-adjacent floors. Regular vacuuming keeps the felt fresh, and brushing removes any lint or crumbs. The screens have held up well against bag scrapes and the odd coffee spill, with no fraying or sagging.
Partition Screen Felt offers a way to break up open rooms without harsh lines or hard barriers. For student or coworking spaces, felt screens strike the right balance between flexibility and acoustic control, and the soft colours blend in without dominating. Always match screen layouts to your workflow: leave sightlines open where you need supervision, but group pods to shield from main walkways.
For sites with heavy daily use, felt’s non-fraying quality is a real plus, and the screens can be shuffled around for events. If you are planning a similar project, consider a mix of colourways to set zones or signal different activities.
