Project
For this busy Somerset West gathering hall, we fitted felt entry mats and acoustic panels to handle heavy foot traffic and create a calmer, more welcoming foyer.
The foyer in this Somerset West gathering hall faces two classic coastal challenges: constant in-and-out traffic and a lively buzz that rises fast when the hall fills up. With sundowners, school events and weekend groups coming and going, the tiled floors got slippery and gritty, while even normal conversations could make the space feel sharp and harsh. The old coir mats caught some dirt but nothing close to what was needed, and the echo pushed sound from the foyer into the main hall.
Local weather plays a part, too: wet winters bring muddy shoes, and strong Cape sun fades anything left in the direct light. The team here needed something that would work for both events and everyday use, with finishes that would hold up to the crowd and the climate.
We recommended Entry Mat Soft for the main doors, using a dense felt with a grip back to keep it in place and catch dirt right at the threshold. These mats are cut to fit, so there’s no curled-up corners for anyone to trip over. For the echo, we installed modular Acoustic Panel Felt on two walls facing the entrance, using a fix system suited to the existing plaster. The colours were chosen from our Ink Edge and Stone Wash finishes to echo the light and shadow in that space without showing every mark.
Felt was a good match here because it shrugs off grit, the cut edges don’t fray, and it’s easy to brush or vacuum clean after busy days. Acoustic felt is also less affected by humidity than some textiles, which matters in a coastal zone like Somerset West. We explained to the team that these panels would help to soften speech and footsteps, but the real boost comes from fitting them where sound bounces around the most.
After a few months, the felt entry mats proved their worth: less dust tracked into the hall, less slipping during those rainy spells, and no more mats shifting out of place. The acoustic panels made the foyer noticeably calmer, especially with school groups where the voices used to bounce all over. Cleaning was simpler, too, just a quick run with the vacuum or a soft brush, and the mats and panels stayed smart.
One round of heavy boots did flatten a patch near the door, but a quick lift and shake sorted it out. It's easy to overlook how much a simple, fitted mat or a few wall panels can change the feel of a room until you see the before and after.
If you manage a hall or busy foyer, plan for both grit and sound. A dense felt entry mat right at the threshold keeps most dirt outside, and modular wall panels can tame the harshness without a total refit. Choose colours that suit your light and won’t show every mark, Ink Edge and Stone Wash are good bets for shared spaces.
Remember that any wool felt needs regular brushing or vacuuming, especially in sandy or muddy months. Don’t leave wet mats rolled up or sealed in plastic; let them dry flat if they get soaked. For acoustic felt, spot clean with a mild upholstery shampoo if you need, but avoid heat. If you’re unsure about sizes or finishes, send us a message through our contact form and we can talk you through options for your own foyer.
