Project
Ceiling Cloud Felt was fitted above a yoga loft in a Joburg warehouse, softening sound and light for a calmer practice space.
The yoga loft sits inside a converted warehouse in the heart of Johannesburg, where the Highveld sun streams in and city sounds drift up from the street. Hard surfaces, exposed rafters and high ceilings carried every echo, making it tricky for teachers and students to settle into quiet routines. In winter, cold stone floors and the sheer volume of the space left the loft feeling draughty and distant, while in summer, it overheated quickly without much relief from the urban bustle outside.
The studio hosts morning and evening classes, so both sunlight glare and traffic noise could break focus. The owners needed a way to soften acoustics, lower noise levels and create a sense of warmth overhead, all without heavy building work or dropping the lofty ceiling that gives the space its charm.
We recommended Ceiling Cloud Felt for this project, suspended in a series of floating panels above the main teaching zone. The panels are made from dense acoustic felt, hung on a discrete rail kit that keeps the industrial look but brings acoustic and visual softness right where it’s needed. We offered a choice of finish, and the client chose a mix of Cloud Pale and Ink Edge to balance gentle light reflection with a grounding accent.
Ceiling Cloud Felt was chosen for its sound absorption qualities and non-intrusive install. The felt panels help soak up speech and movement noise, dial down sharp echoes, and break up glare from overhead windows. Because felt is non-woven and doesn’t fray at the edges, it keeps a neat line even with regular air movement and cleaning. The fitting required no heavy framing or loss of ceiling height, and we planned the layout to work around light fittings and easy access for cleaning.
After a few months of classes, teachers reported much less reverb and an easier time keeping voices clear across the room. Students said the space felt cosier, and the felt panels cut down on both echo and harsh sun patches during afternoon sessions. The panels have stayed stable despite the Joburg winter dryness and summer heat, with minimal care beyond a regular light dusting.
No discolouration or distortion has shown up, and routine vacuuming on a low setting has kept the felt looking fresh. The only advice we gave was to rotate mats away from the brightest windows to avoid fading, and to keep up with general cleaning to prevent dust settling on the panels.
For any open-plan studio or workspace in Johannesburg, felt ceiling panels can be a practical fix for sound and light issues, especially in converted buildings with hard, echo-prone surfaces. Ceiling Cloud Felt works well in spaces where you want to keep height and openness but need to calm the acoustics.
If your building gets a lot of direct sun, pick lighter felt finishes for ceiling panels to reflect glare, and remember that all dyed textiles will fade if left in strong sun for months on end. Regular dusting or a gentle vacuum will keep panels looking clean.
