Everyday care to keep your stairs looking fresh

Start with a regular dry brush to lift surface dust and grit, using a soft clothes brush or a vacuum with a gentle upholstery head. This helps keep the felt surface clear and stops dirt working in, especially on busy staircases where people come and go all day.

Work along the grain of the felt and never use a hard brush or a beater vacuum, as these can roughen the surface. Brush or vacuum at least once a week in high-traffic homes or businesses, or more often if dust builds up.

How to handle spots and spills

If something spills, act quickly. Blot up liquid using a clean, dry towel or kitchen roll, press, do not rub, to avoid pushing the stain deeper into the felt. For sticky marks or muddy spots, gently lift away what you can with a spoon or blunt knife.

For most marks, a little cool water and a drop of mild wool wash or upholstery shampoo will help. Apply with a clean damp cloth, dab rather than scrub, and always test on a hidden area first. Never use hot water or harsh chemicals, as these can shrink or damage the felt. Let the wrap dry flat naturally, away from heaters or strong sun.

Seasonal tips for South African homes and businesses

Highveld winters bring dust, while Cape Town and the coast mean damp air and the risk of mustiness. Brush or vacuum more often during dusty spells, and open windows to keep air moving on humid days. If your stairs are near a sunny window, remember that felt, like any dyed textile, can fade in strong UV. Rotate or shade if possible.

Wool felt buffers humidity but needs a chance to dry out after big spills or if the air has been damp for days. For homes with pets or where shoes are worn indoors, regular cleaning prevents dirt build-up. Moths and carpet beetles are rare but do eat wool when it is dirty and left undisturbed, so do not skip routine brushing, and never store dirty felt or seal it in plastic.
