A quick brush with a soft clothes brush or a gentle vacuuming is all most Desk Mat Felt needs. Wool felt does not fray, so you do not need to worry about cut edges.
Lift dust and crumbs by vacuuming with a soft brush head, working slowly to avoid dragging grit across the surface. For most office or study use, a weekly clean is enough to keep the felt fresh and free of particles.
Spilt tea or coffee, pen marks or food should be blotted quickly with a dry cloth, never rub, as this can set the stain and cause felting. Use cool water and a little mild wool wash or upholstery shampoo, testing on a hidden spot first.
Work from the outside in when blotting. After cleaning, press gently with a dry towel to absorb moisture, then let the mat dry flat in the shade. Do not tumble dry or use heat, as this can shrink or harden wool felt.
Johannesburg's dry Highveld winters bring dust, while Cape Town and Durban can mean damp air and closed windows. Brush or vacuum more often in dusty months, especially near open windows or after windy days. For mats near sunny windows, rotate them to spread out any fading from UV.
Wool is naturally hard to ignite and helps buffer humidity, but it can go musty if left damp. If your workspace closes for holidays, make sure felt mats are dry and clean before storing. Always store loose, never sealed in plastic. Moths and carpet beetles prefer dirty, undisturbed wool: regular cleaning and airflow keep them away.
