When stairs wake the whole house
Wood or tile stairs in family homes are classic, but anyone with children or early risers knows the sound travels. From a first foot on the bottom step to the last scramble at the top, bare feet and shoes both amplify the echo. In winter, the cold underfoot is another shock before sunrise, especially in Joburg with its dry, chilly mornings.
I grew up in a house where my dad’s work boots could wake the whole block, so I understand the need for a quiet start. Most clients who come to us about stairs have already tried loose mats or runners, but these don’t always fit well or stay put, and moving them to clean is a pain.
How Stair Nose Soft helps
We designed Stair Nose Soft wraps for this exact problem. Each one covers the step edge with a layer of dense felt, shaped to the curve of a timber or laminate stair. Felt is non-woven, so it won’t fray where you cut it to size. We use a merino-blend felt for its natural warmth and cushion.
The wraps can be fitted over new or existing stairs. They’re made for practical homes: wipeable, quiet underfoot, and grippy with the right adhesive or double-sided tape. Most people pick a neutral like Stone Wash or Cloud Pale to match oak or lighter floors, but there are deeper colours for darker treads or bold accents.
One family’s quieter mornings
Last winter a client in Cape Town’s southern suburbs asked us to help with her steep wooden stairs. Her toddler had slipped twice, and every trip down in school shoes made a racket that echoed into the kitchen. We cut and fitted Stair Nose Soft in Soft Leaf, which blends with her sage-green walls.
She told me her son now runs down with socks on and no one complains about the noise. There was a little glue on the rail, but it came off with a gentle rub. A small slip, but easily fixed. She said she wished she’d done it when the house was new.
Steps to plan your own stair quiet
- Count and measure each step: width and depth, plus the nosing
- Choose a finish from our colourways to suit your floors and walls
- Decide if you want the wraps fitted by our team or DIY with instructions
- Send us a photo of your stairs (side and top view help most)
- Clear and clean stairs before fitting: felt sticks best to dust-free wood
What to send us if you want advice
Use our contact form to send a few clear photos of your staircase, plus your city or suburb. Tell us if little ones or older family members use the stairs, so we can advise on grip and edge safety.
If you know the tread width and depth, mention those too. We can then suggest the right quantity and fitting method. Our Woodstock studio can cut to size, or you can visit a showroom bay in your area to see samples and finishes.
