Mats before runners

In busy homes, mats are the first line of defence for floors and feet. Start with a mat before you think about runners, the order matters.

Why mats always come first in family homes

It is easy to jump straight to felt runners for passages or kitchens, but in most homes, the real wear comes right at the threshold. Families, pets and visitors carry in sand, grit and water, especially on the Highveld in winter or in Cape Town’s rainy season. That dirt ends up grinding away at both your felt runners and soft floors if you skip the first barrier.

An entry mat is there to take the brunt of the mess. Without it, even the best runner will wear out quicker and lose its edge.

What we have learned about felt mats and runners

At Felt studio, we’ve seen how a dense felt entry mat (like our Entry Mat Soft) with a grip back makes a real difference. Wool felt handles moisture well, so it buffers a bit of wet from rainy shoes, but you must dry it out properly after a wet day. Polyester acoustic felt shakes off sand easily and is simple to spot clean.

Our mats and runners are cut to fit typical South African doors and hearths, with grip backs to keep them in place. Always measure the width of your door or passage and allow a few centimetres clearance for easy cleaning. For busy homes, don’t forget to vacuum under mats and runners, grit can build up where you dont see it.

A story from a family stoep in Durban North

We once fitted new felt runners in a Durban North home, skipping the entry mat because the owners wanted everything to match the passage first. Within weeks, beach sand and garden grit had worked their way under the runner and scratched up the parquet near the front door.

Later, we cut a custom mat for the entry, and the next six months went by with far less mess and wear. The difference was clear, start with the mat, then add the runner.
