Why noise creeps into our desks
You notice it once you start: the sharp tap of a mug on hard timber, the scrape of a pen tray, the rattle as you move a phone or keys. Any bare surface, whether oak, veneer or melamine, turns small movements into distracting sound. In Joburg or Cape Town, where tiled floors and hard desks are common, clatter interrupts calls and unsettles focus.
It is not only about noise for others. Desk sound travels up to your own ears, especially in home offices with kids or pets in the next room, or in offices where everyone’s distractions add up. Most soundproofing tries to treat the big picture: walls, ceilings, or floors. But daily calm often starts small, at elbow height, with what sits between you and the surface.
What felt trays and mats do for real work
We designed Soft Tray Nest because felt is quiet by nature: it cushions, it absorbs impact, and it stays put. Wool felt, like the dense merino blend we use, has a soft strength and thick structure. It does not fray, and its weight helps it sit flat. Each tray comes in three sizes, so keys, chargers, pens and glasses all find a place.
Felt desk mats tie the space together, wide enough for keyboard, mouse, notepad and mug. The stitched edge holds shape, and the surface feels gentle under wrists and arms. You can move trays and mats around as you swap work for drawing, or clear the desk for a laptop-only day. If you spill tea, blot with cool water and dry flat; a quick brush or vacuum keeps dust at bay.
A lesson from an open-plan office fitout
Last autumn we refitted a shared office in Rosebank. The old desks were all hard laminate; with every morning coffee, the room picked up a steady echo. The client, a design team, struggled with background noise on calls, and even in-person meetings felt tense.
We installed Soft Tray Nest sets and large felt desk mats across thirty positions. Within days, the team told us the room felt ‘softer’ and less stressful, not in a vague way, but from the simple absence of clatter. The trays organised loose items, and nobody had to pause mid-call to shift rattling objects out of the way.
Simple steps to a quieter desk
You do not need to overhaul the whole space to cut desk noise. Start with what you handle every day and look for ways to soften, contain and organise. Here are our field notes:
- Pick a tray for each type of object: pens, chargers, specs, keys
- Use a felt desk mat under your main work area to absorb impact
- Keep trays close at hand, not stacked or hidden
- Blot spills on felt with cool water and dry flat in the shade
- Vacuum or brush wool felt regularly to avoid dust build-up
- Rotate trays if sunlight falls strongly on one spot to avoid fading
What to send us for advice
If you want help finding the right felt trays or desk mats, send us a message through our contact form. Let us know your desk size, what you keep close by, and whether the space gets direct sun.
A photo of your desk from above (showing the surface and what sits on it) helps us recommend the right sizes. If you work with others or share a space, mention how many stations you need to organise. We can show samples at our Woodstock studio or any of our showroom bays.
