Cape light and soft pads

Cape homes get more sun and salt air than most, so our felt pads and cushions need to keep their shape and colour for years. Here’s how we make that work.

Cape light can fade and flatten soft finishes

Living close to the coast in Cape Town means your home or café catches more sunlight, wind and salt than you’d expect inland. Big windows let in the beauty, but the strong UV can bleach colour from textiles and warm surfaces fast. Hard tiled floors and painted benches take a beating from daily wear, and without protection, soft pads can go saggy or stained in one damp winter or a single busy season.

I see it most on window seats, banquettes and plinths in open-plan kitchens and reading nooks. People want light, soft colour but end up disappointed when a pale cushion goes yellow or flat too soon. It’s easy to avoid if you pick the right felt, finish and routine from the start.

Soft felt pads that handle sun, salt and busy use

Our Merino Plinth Felt wraps use a dense merino-blend felt that holds its shape in a sunny spot, and wool copes with Cape damp as long as it can breathe and dry out. Felt is non-woven, so it doesn’t fray or unravel, and wool takes up moisture vapour, buffering swings from cold, foggy days to warm afternoons. That matters in a house that goes from sea breeze to closed-up in a few hours.

Our colourways like Mist Paper and Sage Field are picked to resist fading, but all dyed textiles will shift with strong UV. Rotate pads and move trays or runners every season, and use a proper window film or blind if a piece gets direct sun day in and day out. Vacuuming felt pads keeps grit from working into the pile, and in coastal air, it stops salt from stiffening the surface.

A story from a Camps Bay kitchen window

Last winter, we installed a layered felt window seat cushion in a Camps Bay kitchen, facing the Atlantic. The owner wanted pale Sage Field for a clean look, but the seat got full morning sun and plenty of salt spray when the window was open.

Six months on, her pad still held its shape and colour, no yellowing, no sagging corners. She had followed our advice to rotate the cushion and brush it out when sweeping up the sand. That’s all it took for a piece that now lives up to Cape light.

Steps for keeping felt pads fresh and bright

A few habits will keep your felt pads and cushions looking new, even in tough Cape conditions. Start with the right textile and finish, and set a simple routine.

What to send if you want us to help

If you’re dealing with a sunny Cape window, a high-traffic plinth or any spot where sun and salt meet daily life, we can help you choose and fit the best felt finish. Send us a message through our contact form with a photo of the seat, bench or ledge, plus rough measurements and a note about how much sun it gets. You can also mention your preferred colourway or ask for swatch samples.

We’ll come back with practical advice on textile choice, care and installation. If you’d like to see or feel the options, our Woodstock studio has a full sample library and we also have appointment bays at Rosebank, Canal Walk, Gateway, Menlyn, Tyger Valley, Brooklyn Design Square and the V&A Waterfront.
