Why drifting ceiling clouds are a real problem
Ceiling clouds do their best work when they are set firmly in place. If you hang them and they slowly drift out of line, even a well-designed room starts to look untidy and you lose the acoustic benefit near the busiest tables or desks.
In South African spaces, whether it’s an office, a clinic, or a busy café, ceiling fans, open windows, and aircon can nudge ceiling felt off centre. Highveld air movement or a breeze off the Cape flats can shift a cloud by a few centimetres in a week, and with lighting grids and ducts above, adjustment isn’t always simple.
What we have learned fitting felt clouds
We learned early on that the mounting method makes all the difference. Standard ceiling hooks or thin cord let panels swing and twist, so we use a rail kit: the cloud slides onto an aluminium rail, which fixes to the slab or dropped ceiling and keeps the felt exactly where you need it.
Felt clouds need to be sized right for the space and the rail matched to the ceiling type. If your cloud is too large for the fixing gap, it can wobble; too narrow and you don’t get full coverage where it matters. Our Polyester acoustic felt is light enough for most ceiling grids, but if you want a Merino blend for richer texture, let’s check the ceiling load together.
A quick story from a recent job
We did a cloud install last winter for a primary school media centre in Mbombela. The client had tried direct hooks and cord, but after a few weeks, the panels were uneven and one had spun halfway around.
We replaced their system with our rail hang kit and set each cloud perfectly level above the reading tables. The difference was clear: no more drift, neater lines, and the sound in the space improved immediately. The principal sent us a photo two months later, everything still lined up.
Steps to keep your clouds true
Getting the hang kit and cloud right in your space makes all the difference. Here’s what we always do for a stable, lasting fit:
- Measure ceiling height, slab type and duct positions before cutting rail or panel
- Choose a rail kit suited for the weight and finish of each felt cloud
- Check ceiling grid strength, especially if using heavier Merino blend felt
- Fix the rail before sliding clouds into place, don’t hang direct from cord
- Level each panel before tightening fixings and check clearance for sprinklers, fans and lighting
What to send us if you need help
If you’d like our advice or want a rail hang kit for your space, send us a message through our contact form. Please include a photo of the ceiling, a basic sketch or plan with rough dimensions, and let us know what the ceiling is made of, solid slab, grid, or timber.
Tell us where the space is (city or suburb helps with on-site planning) and what you want the felt clouds to do, improve sound, soften light, add a colour highlight, or just tidy up a noisy corner. If you’re unsure about material, our Woodstock team can guide you on finishes and care.
