Why sticky vinyl never lasts in a Cape café
Café booths see everything: morning regulars, families, students with laptops, crumbs, sugar, and the odd splash of red velvet cake. In Cape Town’s winter you want warmth, but by summer, the sun bakes any surface near a window. Vinyl, while easy to wipe, turns sticky in humidity, cracks in sun, and never feels inviting for more than a quick coffee.
We see cafés try to soften their booths with scatter cushions and throws, but these just end up on the floor, stained or missing after a busy weekend. A better way is to wrap the booth in something that softens edges, muffles noise and stands up to daily use, even in the moist Atlantic air and open windows of Cape autumn.
How we use felt for lasting, soft booths
Our Banquette Wrap is made for job after job in busy spaces. We use a dense felt with a smooth, bound edge so the finish looks intentional, not like an afterthought. The felt is mounted directly to the booth back or seat, often with a hidden fastening or velcro so you can lift it off for cleaning or renovation.
Wool felt is naturally hard to ignite and resists fraying at the cut edges, which helps keep booths tidy even after a year of elbows. In humid Cape weather, wool takes up moisture vapour without feeling soggy as long as it gets a chance to dry out, important if you mop floors or have the windows open to the sea breeze.
From sketch to soft booth in the old city
One café in the City Bowl had timber booths that looked beautiful but felt cold and noisy. The owner asked us for something soft, but easy to keep clean and not precious about the odd coffee spill.
We templated each booth, cut the wraps to size in our Woodstock studio, and fitted them with a neat stitched edge in Stone Wash and a dash of Ink Edge for contrast. She told us afterwards that regulars now stay for longer meals, and the noise off the timber floor and walls is much less overwhelming at peak times.
Simple steps to plan your own banquette wrap
If you want to rethink your café booths or bench seating, you do not need a full renovation. A good fit starts with a few quick steps.
- Take clear photos of your booth backs and seats from the front and side
- Measure the length, height and depth of each bench you want wrapped
- Note the main challenges: sun through windows, food spills, humidity, noise
- Think about your colours, our felt comes in Sage Field, Mist Paper, Stone Wash and more
- If you have a busy kitchen or open windows, mention it so we can recommend the best fibre
What to send if you want our help
Send us a message through our contact form with your city, a few photos, and your basic booth measurements. We will ask about your busiest times and any cleaning habits that matter to you.
If you are in Cape Town, you can book a sample viewing at our Woodstock studio. Outside Cape Town, ask about our bays at Canal Walk, Tyger Valley, or the V&A Waterfront, or we can arrange for swatches to be couriered to your café. Let us help you make your booths the best seats in the house.
